10/08/04 11:27:47 CDT Hello all, I recently graduated in the class of 2003 and I as well as the rest of my class, have always wanted to know what happened to the school's football team. During my four years there, and even years before we never were allowed to have a football team. I would greatly appreciate any information on this. Thanks!! c/o 2003!!!!!!!!! R. Cox Birmingham, AL

08/26/04 08:53:10 CDT My favorite memory of Ramsay was Miss Callan, She taught Government and economics. I was a student from 1963 to 1966. At that time Miss Callan was at least 65 years old and learning to drive.She bought an old 1953 Ford and actually drove it to school every day. I can still remember walking along Highland Avenue and seeing her pass me as she weaved and jerked her way to school.I guess God was looking out for her. Another thing i remember well was a history teacher, miss Caldwell.One year at the end of May, she had the American History final exam questions on the blackboard at 7:30 in the morning.You would not beleive the crowd outside her classroom Copying down the questions.I guess the last period class made the highest grade! 08/18/04 13:37:08 CDT I just found a website that some Ramsay folks would probably enjoy. M.D. Smith put up a website that has a bunch of audios featuring the 1957 Indian Springs glee club (and a 1999 reunion). indiya <landor@mail.ru> , 1980; New York, NY

03/23/04 19:29:26 CST HI, Thank you for such an informative website Perekop.Info USSR,

02/28/04 23:57:43 CST Well, it seems that I am the only classmate from my time that is contributing to this page. This year is our 20 year reunion and I really wish that I could be there. I wouldn't say that all of my memories were fond ones. The best memories I have are of Mr. Crenshaw and band and Mrs. Summey, the French teacher (please forgive me for misspelling your name!) Ramsay also lost a very good teacher right after I graduated. Mrs. Troughbridge was the best English teacher I have ever had. She offered, to the students, an awesome way of learning and still having English be fun. She made Mythology extremely interesting. I have to say that most of the teachers that were there during my time were really great teachers. They knew how to make learning fun. I have to say that I am shocked that the Thespians of my time never went on to make it big on the big screen. We had so much talent on that stage that it is still hard to believe that none of them are famous now. They should be! I found my diploma just the other day while going through old stuff. The memories that it brought back were wonderful. I don't think I could have asked for a better place to spend my 4 years. Ramsay....YOU ROCK! Thanks to all who made 1980 through 1984 awesome! Happy 20 years gang! Who knew we would ever make it this far! Renee Bowman George <mscowboy02@att.net> , 1984; Castle Rock, CO

02/10/04 20:41:02 CST i am of the class of 2003 . i love Ramsay high school <kenion@roe5rfds.com> , 98; Tulsa, OK

02/10/04 20:38:59 CST Thanks, I found this all quite useful! <johnunkerman@rogers.com> , 98; toronto, ON

02/01/04 10:35:34 CST Kinda complicated, but I THINK I would have been class of '59. I was born in August of '41. Started Glen Iris in Sept. of '47. That would have put me as a freshman at Ramsey in 1955, and in the class of 1959, except...we moved to Homewood before my last year and I finished up at Shades Valley. EXCEPT, I flunked so many classes (brilliant kid?) that after my last year I still needed one more class to graduate (trig?) and took that single class back at Ramsey. whew. Eventually got my diploma from S.V. and went to the U. of Ala. I joined the air guard in B'ham in '63 and got my USAF wings, which led to a career with Trans World Airlines. I'm retired now. Just dug out my '58 Rams' Horn. What a nostalgia trip. Any plans for a 50th reunion? Massey Lambard <mhlambard@gulftel.com> , 1959; Foley, AL

01/07/04 15:18:45 CST Cool page !!! wish you many visitors and fun with your website! a happy new year!!! bob

10/20/03 08:33:00 CDT I WOULD LIKE TO SAY MY FEW YEARS AT RAMSAY WERE THE BEST OF MY LIFE...RAMSAY TEACHERS, FACULTY, STUDENTS, AND STAFF REALLY MADE A GREAT IMPACT UPON MY LIFE...THEY TAUGHT ME THINGS THAT NO OTHER COULD HAVE...I WILL FOREVER LOVE THE SCHOOL "ON THE CITY'S SOUTHERN BORDER"...RAMSAY HAS FAR SURPASSED IT'S MISSION AND I THANK THEM FOR IT..."LONG WE'LL LOVE THE RAMSAY HIGH SCHOOL, AND BE TRUE TO THE" SANTAYANA WOODS <allthatandsmore@yahoo.com> , 1993; Birmingham, AL

10/09/03 08:18:19 CDT Hello I graduated from Ramsay in 2000. We don't use the fight song any more. We pretty much sing the almamater...and this is it. Chanda Glover Atlanta , GA

10/02/03 20:02:43 CDT I have successfully deleted my e-mail address book.....anyone wanting to keep in touch with this klutz (clutz?) send me one and help me rebuild. Gee I miss Alabama so much.....Mike Mike McClellan <mikemc@telepak.net> , 1966; Mendenhall, Mississippi

09/30/03 18:55:06 CDT Coach Mutt Reynolds is now a resident at Somerbey Retirement Home off LakeShore, apparently still exercises and whistles. webmaster <webmaster@ramsayreunion.com> , 65; Pinson, AL

09/30/03 05:11:57 CDT My brother Charles Noah Weaver class of 1962 passed away with a heart attack at the age of 61. I was glad he got to come to the Glen Iris Reunion and see many of our old friends and Ramsay classmates. Jo Ann Weaver Baker <baker70@bellsouth.net> , 1966; Birmingham, AL

09/16/03 14:36:52 CDT Is there anybody out there who graduated in January or May of 1963? We should have had a 40th reunion. Ann West-Bray <a_bray@bellsouth.net> , 1963; Orlando, FL

09/06/03 22:17:22 CDT I was at Ramsay 1948-1951, and Coach Reynolds was there, coaching and teaching biology. Virginia Dodson Halbrooks <Vhal4Quix@aol.com> , 1951; North Miami, FL

08/25/03 20:28:39 CDT One day while I was beating myself up trying to locate Ramsay alumni I happened across Carmel. She never knew how much her words of encouragement made my day. If I ever met her in the 60's her face is forgotten.....along with many others; but she lives on as one of my favorite people. Mike McClellan <mikemc@telepak.net> , 1966; Mendenhall, Ms.

08/20/03 19:04:18 CDT Where have all the class of 1974 gone? By the way what do I do with the elevator tickets i bought as a freshman? The best 4 years of my educational life where at Ramsay, I am glad to see it's still kicking. Hey Susan K. Smith Terry Smith <MRBLASTXXX@aol.com> , 1974; Dora, AL

07/26/03 19:40:47 CDT Where are all my team mates from the 1953 State Champions? Richard O'Connell <TWILE@comcast.net> , 1955; Mt. Pleasant, SC

07/19/03 22:41:47 CDT It is with great sadness that we have learned of the death of Carmel Parsons Thomaston on December 2, 2002 Some details of her life and work as an author can be found at http://www.eclectics.com/carmel.html. Margariette Hoomes <hoomesm@charter.net> , 1970; AL

07/15/03 21:55:32 CDT I did not go to Ramsay, I went to Shades Valley. I did go to Avondale School from 1952-1957 until we moved to Mtn. Brook. I read where there was a reunion for Avondale Alum-how do I get on the list? Ann Sullivan <godmomfor2@yahoo.com> , ; Birmingham, AL

07/04/03 08:19:52 CDT Okay, I confess. I'm not a Ramsay alum. But I spent 8 years at Glen Iris praying for the day I'd be at Ramsay. (My sister, Kathryne Manis, did go there for a while).Then we moved and except for only one very brief occasion, I never saw any of my Glen Iris classmates again. Since many of them did go on to Ramsay, this may be my only chance of tracking some of them down. So if you are the following persons, or know any of their email addresses, please contact me: Jimmy Thompson, Kathi Little, Carolyn Shahid, Kenny Shunarrah, Naseem Ajlouny, Barry Simmons, Jimmy Eads, Terry Marcus, Sylvia Luft, Carol Richter, Paul Boehm, John Kilgore, Bo Smith, Leon Miller, Andre Toffel, Johnny Grimes, Murray Hiam, etc. Thanks Ramsay Rams for letting me infiltrate your group. I always thought of Ramsay as my school too. I wish I HAD gone there. Andrew Manis (megsdad23@msn.com). Andrew Manis <megsdad23@msn.com> , "1972"; Macon, GA

06/10/03 12:27:30 CDT I read somewhere that Thompson Reynolds was the brother of the recent Vestavia Hills Mayor, Carl Pat Reynolds. That is not the case. We represented Pat even before he was elected. He was defeated by Scotty McCallum, whose son Phillip previously worked at this firm. David Wininger <DDW@winingerlaw.com> , ; Bham, AL

05/27/03 15:29:54 CDT I am inquiring on if there will be a 10 year reunion for the class of '93.Thanks! Anne Sheppard <anne.choat@amsouth.com> , 1993; Birmingham, AL

05/14/03 14:45:18 CDT Every day I open this site hoping to see plans for a reunionfor 1950-1960 like we had almost 12 years ago. I pounded on Billy Haas and wrote Emily Smith to find out what we could do to try and get something going. Both Betty Cain and Bill Phillips volunteered. What's up with this?? Our numbers are going down everyday good people. Miss all of you! Get back to me. Let's make it happen. Love and sloppy wet kisses. Richard Richard O'Connell <TWILE@COMCAST.NET> , Jan.'55; Mt. Pleasant, SC

04/24/03 13:43:39 CDT One memory of Ramsay that I am especially fond of involves my 9th-Grade history teacher, Coach Doug Wheeler. I have long forgotten what I did to deserve it, but I DO remember staying after school and sanding the tops of every wooden desk in his classroom...ironically, years later when I taught at a summer school where Coach Wheeler was an administrator, I gave the same punishment to a student who was caught writing "inappropriate" words on a lab table! Thanks for the tip, Coach! Loyd Mehaffey <lmehaffey@shelbyed.k12.al.us> , 1970; Chelsea, AL

04/21/03 15:05:21 CDT Do you watch American Idol? Did anyone see a sign for Ruben in the audience that had the letters E.R.H.S. on it? Is that Erskine Ramsay High School? Did Ruben go to Ramsay? John erwin <jwerwin@juno.com> , 1969; Auburn, IN

04/11/03 10:13:01 CDT I just wanted to share with all of the Ramsay Alumni the fun things about Ramsay. I loved the school staff and falcuty. Ramsay was the best school although I wanted to go to another school. I enjoyed Ramsay and I am sure everyone else did also. Vincent Harris if you read this please send me an email. Shulandra Woods <taz2001shay2001@yahoo.com> , 2001; Birmingham, Al

04/07/03 06:56:42 CDT I'm sure I join many others in mourning the death of Hope Bryant Smith ['67]. Hope was an inspiration to others even when we were at Ramsay. I will always remember her bright smile, her enthusiasm, and her great kindness to all with whom she came in contact. Her faith was evident in the way in which she lived her life. I am at a loss for words... Kathryn Ide Langford <kathlang@attbi.com> , 67; Lilburn, GA

03/27/03 09:32:45 CST OMG! I love this. I have been so nostalgic lately that finding this website is like a blessing!In my 4 years at Ramsay, there are a lot of memories, but a few stand out like:1967--First week being a Freshman--not many people signed up for Chorus, so Miss Elizabeth Selman went to all the 7th period study halls and recruited people by having everyone sing choruses of "Do, Lord, oh do Lord." Anybody else remember? I thought she was crazy, but I sure loved her. 1967-1971: Football Games! Remember when Ramsay won the district and got to play in Montgomery and won there too! I remember at first there were just two busses going--just players and band. Then the principal said we could get out of school to go and suddenly 15 busses were going! That was a great time.1970-'71: Carol Richter and I roamed the halls. As a senior, I only actually went to two classes...History with Mr. Earnest (remember the Pillsbury Dough Boy?) and English (teacher's name escapes me at the moment.) We were always getting out of PE by saying we had work to do on the School Paper--The Ram's Horn--and we had forged a teacher's signature on several hall passes and just used them over and over. What a great year!I'd love to hear from anybody who remembers anything about the Arts programs--Chorus, Music, Theatre (what little there was). Please send email. Kitty Kessler Reagan <songbird54@aol.com> , 1971;

03/12/03 11:03:42 CST I agree. And I remove them as soon as I see them. I try to check everyday. Thanks. Webmaster <webmaster@ramsayreunion.com> , ;

03/12/03 01:32:57 CST Its bad enough that I keep getting spammed to death by these credit card debt offers. It seems like everywhere I turn I see ads for repair credit this and that. Now these companies are posting messages on your guest book to advertise their credit counseling services? Give me a break! Maybe some of us don’t mind having bad credit and just want to use the Internet in peace. Post your junk elsewhere. Brenda Sun City, OR

02/22/03 02:13:27 CST i am of the class of 2002 . i love Ramsay high school soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much. i would not change one moment of my high school life. Vincent Harris <bugnvin@yahoo.com> , ; Birmingham, al

02/07/03 11:54:04 CST Am very interested in finding out any info on the 50th reunion next year for the class of 1954. Does anybody have any info or a contact I can reach? Thanks! Richard "Dickie" Lande <clande@waterous.com> , 1954; Houston, TX

12/29/02 11:13:50 CST With thanks to Ramona Bayes Woods whocomposed this with her cousins during their yearly Christmasparty. I thought y'all might enjoy it. We made it!!! Somehow wesurvived You lived as a child in the 50s or the 60s. Lookingback, it's hard to believe that we have lived as long as wehave.... ............ As children, we would ride in cars with noseat belts or air bags. Riding in the back of a pickup truck on awarm day was always a special treat. Our baby cribs were coveredwith bright colored lead-based paint. We had no childproof lidson medicine bottles, doors, or cabinets, and when we rode ourbikes, we had no helmets. Not to mention hitchhiking to town as ayoung kid!) We drank water from the garden hose and not from abottle. Horrors. We would spend hours building our go-carts outof scraps and then rode down the hill, only to find out we forgotthe brakes. After running into the bushes a few times we learnedto solve the problem. We would leave home in the morning and playall day, as long as we were back when the street lights came on.No one was able to reach us all day. No cell phones. Unthinkable.We played dodge-ball and sometimes the ball would really hurt. Wegot cut and broke bones and broke teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents. They were accidents. No one was toblame but us. Remember accidents? We had fights and punched eachother and got black and blue and learned to get over it. We atecupcakes, bread and butter, and drank sugar soda but we werenever overweight......... we were always outside playing. Weshared one grape soda with four friends, from one bottle and noone died from this? We did not have Play Stations, Nintendo 64, XBoxes, video games at all, 99 channels on cable, video tapemovies, surround sound, personal cellular phones, personalcomputers, internet chat rooms. We had friends. We went outsideand found them. We rode bikes or walked to a friend's home andknocked on the door, or rung the bell or just walked in andtalked to them. Imagine such a thing. Without asking a parent! Byourselves! Out there in the cold cruel world! Without a guardian.How did we do it? We made up games with sticks and tennis ballsand ate worms and although we were told it would happen, we didnot put out very many eyes, nor did the worms live inside usforever. Little League had tryouts and not everyone made theteam. Those who didn't had to learn to deal withdisappointment..... Some students weren't as smart as others sothey failed a grade and were held back to repeat the samegrade.....Horrors. Tests were not adjusted for any reason. Ouractions were our own. Consequences were expected. No one to hidebehind. The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke a law wasunheard of. They actually sided with the law, imagine that! Thisgeneration has produced some of the best risk-takers and problemsolvers and inventors, ever. The past 50 years has been anexplosion of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure,success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with itall. And y'all are among them. Congratulations! Kathryn IdeLangford <kathlang@attbi.com>, '67; Lilburn, GA

10/20/02 16:46:26 CDT I was only at Ramsy 2 years, but whata blast. the friends I made the times we had. The best memory Ihave though was the defeat of Robert E lee High School inMontgomery, I have seen Coach Reynolds a few times in the lasttwenty years, I think it was his favorite too. My worst memorywas the loss to John Carroll the next week, I did not want toleave the house. " Can you say Pat Sullivan?" Thefunniest of times was riding to school with Jack Fiorello,afterwe had both moved over the mountain and continued at Ramsay andwe were late everyday for the first 3 weeks of school. We toldhim (Mr. Flesser) it would not happen again (everyday). And lastbut not least the placement of a gigantic snowball on GeorgeWheby's new GTO by myself and Jack Fiorello, after George told us" you better not hit my car with one of those ..........Snowballs. 09/15/02 14:55:51 CDT I went to Ramsay from 1946-1949, whenI went to Marion Military Institute and graduated high school. Ihaven't lived in Birmingham since 1961, but, I considerBirmingham to be my hometown. During my time, one of the starfootball players was "Big" John Baumgardner (sp?),Sidney Jaffee, and most I can't remember. We had a very goodteam. Coach Eubanks was the head coach, with Nick Ardello andCoach Reynolds. I remember our Spanish teach was a Mrs. Johnson.J.R. Gardner was principal. He was also my principal at LakeviewGrammar School. I never got a school yearbook since I wasn'tthere my senior year. I still keep in touch with classmates FredRock and Bobby Terrell. Would love to hear from others. 09/12/02 16:10:53 CDT The four years I spent at Ramsay HighSchool were quite interesting. I can't say that I completelyenjoyed every minute but I can say that it was a true experience.Ramsay was and still is a school that will never be forgotten andall who enter will never be forgotten. My favorite things aboutRamsay were the faculty(some of them), and the environment. Oneof the most memorable things that I will never forget is thelevel of superiority that was always bestowed upon Ramsay, not bythe faculty and not by the other schools but by the students.Ramsay students knew we were the best and that was all that couldbe said about it, despite our lack of a football team. Ramsay isstil a great school and I am very glad that so many people havetaken the time out to honor and respect the time they spent atRamsay. I am also pleased to learn of the new developments withthe restoration of the school, as we all know, it was well neededand well deserved. The class of 2000 will never be forgotten andwe will forever haunt the halls of Ramsay. Our legacy if no otherwill never be forgotten. I have to admit I am pleased to be aRamsay Graduate! Carrie A. 08/23/02 09:25:50 CDT After visiting a craft store lastweek, I realized that Thanksgiving will be here before we knowit. The last 12 months have been difficult for our country andall our lives have been changed forever. As 9/11 nears, I feelmore thankful than ever to live in this great country. We owe agreat debt to those who have served as well as those whocurrently serve and protect at whatever level. Most of usprobably feel a greater urge to hold those we love close. Ourdaughter was on a plane on 9/11, but I am thankful that the planewas grounded before takeoff. I'm thankful that our son spent lastweek with us while he was in town for more Oracle training. I'mthankful he was here to celebrate Don's birthday and that the 3of us were able to talk with Courtnay when she called her dad.I'm thankful that she is safe and is serving God - but not quiteas thankful that she is in Ghana, West Africa...where there istribal warfare...no roads where she is...little medicalattention...electricity and running water only as long as thegenerator works. I'm very thankful for email since we can't callher easily. She has to go to another village to have internetaccess, but that doesn't seem to slow her down. I'm thankful thatshe will come home for good to attend seminary when her term ofservice is up in November, 2003. Never thought I would say this,but I'd be thankful to move back to Birmingham. Though both myparents have been gone for years, Birmingham is still home. Ieven promise to be thankful if Don can find a EE/hardwaredesign/programming job in B'ham! I'm also thankful for the yearsspent at Ramsay and the friends made. It's easy to take thelittle day-to-day things for granted. I encourage everyone to bemore aware of our daily blessings, of the grace and presence ofGod and the strength He brings to our lives. I'd love to hearfrom old friends! 06/11/02 07:54:27 CDT Hi! I've been reading theannouncements on the ramsayreunion page. I was in the first classin 1976 when Ramsay became "Ramsay Alternative HighSchool." I had already gone two years to Ensley High Schoolwhen I was invited to attend Ramsay's new enrichment program. Ourclass loved Ramsay. We came from all over the city and made ahome at the school we called "RAHS." We explored whoErskine P. Ramsay was, finding an old book about him at thelibrary down the hill from the school. My crowd was the theatregroup and we worked almost every day in the auditorium and in thedressing rooms above. We found an old portrait of Ramsay and tookhim as our mascot. Ramsay did change when we came. 1976 was thelast year for the Ramsay football team and the marching band.While I was there, we developed a gymnastics team, volleyballteam, tennis team (having a high school with tennis courts was ajoy!), and a soccer team. Many traditions were still the same,though. The colors were still blue and white and, when wegraduated, the boys wore blue gowns and the girls white. Weclimbed many staircases to get to our classes (we loved the oldwooden desks but the powers that be took them all out when theydiscovered we sat on top of them and never in them) and walkedall over the Birmingham Southside between school and playrehearsal time. Ramsay was not only our school, but ourplayground and our family. I'm sure it has changed even more inthe 20+ years since I was there, but I wanted you to know thatRamsay continued to educate and impress students like me, whofound great joy and challenging, gifted teachers there. Thank youfor the ramsayreunion page. Denise Dutton Benshoof, 1978

Not many people can say i was here when Ramsaywas built or when the gym was added on, and i am proud to saythat i was here when we got the new staircase,elevator, andauditorium seats.Our school has always been known to present thebest and brightest minds the city of Birmingham has to offer, wehave always been able to say we are the best, now we can say wehave the best facility. As our alma mater says" on thecities southern border stands the school we love. hearts a glowand voices raising sends our praise above. Hail to thee our almamater faithful we will be, long we love you Ramsay High Schooland be true to thee." Now when we veiw our edifice thosemajestic words should flow though the deepest pits in all souls.We should b prouds to wear majestic royal blue and pure white. 3/10/02 05:15:00 CST I am so sorry that I missed theAvondale Reunion. I was in the class of 1955. I went to Ramsay,class of '59 and on to Bham Southern, class of '68. It took me awhile to finish college, as I dropped our, married and had 2children, before finishing my education. I moved back toBirmingham last year after a 23 year absence, and would reallylove to contact some old elementary and high school friends.Please put me on your contact list for any upcoming events atAvondale and Ramsay.
I attended the Glen Iris reunion last year with my sister Edna(McNutt) Mcwilliams and my Mother, Ruth McNutt, who was a teacherthere from 1956-1964. I was just talking to Joe Ganster todayabout avondale. He went to Avondale in the 1930's, and we bothsaid we would love to see the school, and all the renovations,and wished they would have a reunion sometime. He has not beeninvited to a reunion ever, and he has been right here in Bham allthese years. So let us old timers know when something is going onat Avondale. Some of us may not be around for the next time.Thanks.
