4/30/00 We have never missed a Ramsay reunion for
the Class 0f '64, so we are looking forward to seeing
old friends from other Ramsay classes. We moved from
Birmingham in 1977 because of company relocations and
have lived in Atlanta, Kansas City, Boston, Dallas,
and St. Louis over the past 25 years. Our daughter,
Kerri, is a senior at the University of Alabama, and
our son, Scott, will be attending the University of
Kansas this fall. It will be great to renew old
frienships and make new ones! - Jack Barefield, '64, jack_barefield@bausch.com
4/29/00 Thank you Nancy Denty Onorato for telling
me who the 1967 Rams Horn was dedicated to. -Janette
Spencer Wells, '65, dwells1610@aol.com
4/29/00 Hi David, Thank you for these updates and
also the time it takes you to do it.! - Janette
Spencer Wells
4/28/00 Just wanted to echo the invitation for
those who would like to attend the committee meeting
this Sunday (see David's e-mail) -- we could use the
extra hands to help in the mailout of the formal
announcement---we also need to report in any adress
findings by then also so they can be included in this
mailing---I found Don Hogan !!--now we need about a
hundred more--Thanks for all your help and
support.-Randy.
4/28/00 Thank you, Randy and friends for getting
this event together. I was involved in the early
stages of the 20th and had to drop out, so I know how
much work and TIME is envolved. It is wonderful to
see all the names listed here and to think, it has
only been 35 years.-Don Hogan, '65, hogan@futuresouth.com
4/28/00 [In response to the picture challenge:]
You bet! I looked of dorky in high school.-Serena
Zuckerman Verzhinsky, Muffingds@aol.com
4/28/00 OK group, here is the challenge: Who else
is willing to send a recent photo to go on the
website. These will be linked on the comments page.
You know you look better now than 35 years ago! Come
on ladies. Come on guys. Send by snail mail (I will
scan and mail back)or e-mail.-David Meadows, 260
Westchester Dr., Birmingham, AL 35215, or davidmea@bellsouth.net
4/27/00 I have just thought (new for me) and am
wondering how many out there go all the way back to
Glenn Iris Grammar School. That's really going back
down the line.- Dan Curtis, '63, dxedan@aol.com
4/25/00 Does anyone have the email addresses for
Sydney Parker and Lisa Cheraskin? - David Meadows, davidmea@bellsouth.net
4/23/00 Can anyone tell me who the 1967 Rams Horn
was dedicated to? Does anyone have a 1965 Rams Horn
they are willing to sale to a '65 graduate?- Janette
Spencer Wells, '65, dwells1610@aol.com
4/20/00 Many thanks to all involved in putting
this reunion together. Your many hours of work will
be appreciated by all,I'm sure. I have enjoyed my
class reunions so much and look forward to
multiplying that fun times five. Fondly, - Becky
Weeks Miller, '66, rebecca.miller@mindspring.com
4/17/00 Live is good. The Lord has blessed us with
three wonderful children, a great place to live and a
family second to none. I've managed to stay in
Birmingham, well in Homewood, and I couldn't be
happier. - Jim Whitson, '65, jwhitsonsr@aol.com
4/13/00 We are looking forward to seeing everyone
at the reunion. - Doug Brown, '65, dlb@ajlaw.com
4/10/00 I have been in touch with P. Busby
Lancaster and P. Berndt McMichael and am looking
forward to the reunion. Saw your letter, NancyDenty,
can't wait to see you. Remember we found out we were
related in homeroom our freshman year with Mr V? I
have been living in Huntsville for 25 years and
married to David (we met in college) for almost 30
years. We have two daughters, Kelly and Jordan. They
are both back here and Kelly married her high school
and college sweetheart and we have a grandson, Ethan,
who is eight months old. Look forward to catching up
with old friends.....Judy Justice Richardson, Class
of '67, DRichar507@AOL.com
4/10/00 I was raised on southside at 14th street
and 14th avenue. It's still there down the street
from Dreamland. I used to play in Triangle Park and
go to South Highland Elementary. I would save up coat
hangars and bottles so I could turn them in for money
enough to get bus fare downtown on Saturday morning
to go to the Alabama theatre and see cliffhanger
serials and cartoons. On the 4th of July I'd walk
outside and look straight up at the fireworks from
channel 6. My childhood buddies were Jurgan and Heinz
Dietrich. My family moved to Homewood in 1959 and I
attended Shades Cahaba, Homewood Jr. High and Shades
Valley before we moved back to Southside in 1964. I
enrolled at Ramsay as a sophomore and many of you
thought I was the snob from "over the
mountain". The truth being I was one of you. I
never explained. Mr. Alley thought I was a slacker
because I had failed my sophomore year at Shades
Valley. He didn't care whether I had tonsillitis and
missed the exams and they wouldn't let me make them
up. He calculated what extra courses I would have to
take because some credits from Jefferson County
didn't transfer to the City of Birmingham. I took
art, drafting and choir to make up the difference. By
now I was totally hooked on the Tams and it didn't
hurt my Mom owned "The Home Front" at Gable
Square, which sold beer. I think that kept me out of
the alley brawls even with my Beatle haircut. I dated
a girl from Mountain Brook High, which only added to
my situation. I made the "B" honor roll my
entire senior year. My homeroom was Ms Smith (?
English teacher) and I sat behind Merritt
DeBardelaben (?). She was so nice to me. In my junior
year I missed a science test and made it up after
school but the science teacher died of a heart attack
that night (can't remember his name). No one believed
me and they never found the test. I remember a
history teacher on the 3rd floor had a rubber plant
she used to talk to. She was called out of the class
one day and someone (not me) through it out the
window into courtyard. She cried for 3 days. I
remember the world history teacher (Ms Callen) who
had a twin sister and used to fill up the blackboard
with notes we had to copy. I took Geometry from Ms
Willingham and was proving triangles in fewer steps
than she. She was not amused. I remember taking
drafting on the 3rd floor and smoking in class. The
teacher let us (Mr. Shrader ?) as long as we had the
windows open in the summer and a glass jar with a
screw on cap to put it in in case someone came. He
was also rumored to be dating a cheerleader. He later
married her, I think. I was standing in line to get
sized for my cap and gown when I was pulled out and
told to report to Mr. Alley. It seemed he had
miscalculated my credits and I was 0.5 of a credit
from graduating. I was devastated. I did not attend
the Prom and was not allowed in the play. I remember
snookums was the song. When all of you graduated and
left in 1967 I had to enroll at Hayes High night
school to make up that 0.5 credit. The only course
they were offering that I hadn't taken was
Bookkeeping. Yuk. I passed and they mailed my diploma
to a vacant lot since my house had been taken by I-20
across from St. Elias Church near Ollie's BBQ . I had
to write Action Line in the Post Herald to get them
to help me and it was finally mailed to me at my new
address back in Homewood. Through it all I remember
hanging out at Burger-In-A-Hurry and Shoney's
Eastwood Mall. I had the 2nd tape player to go in a
car in Alabama (a 4 track then). I had no tapes
because no one sold them so I had to buy blanks and
found an electronic place in the warehouse district
on southside to tape them. As I remember, the album
cost $6.98, the blank $ 5.00 and the cost for
recording was $ 5.00. So every tape I had cost $
16.98 not including tax. But I had the Temps, Tops,
Marvin Gaye, Mary Wells, etc.. After leaving Ramsay,
I worked and went to night school and in 1968
enrolled at Jacksonville State. I chose Jax St.
because my girlfriend at that time could not get into
'Bama. After one year she met and married a guy in
B'ham and I was back at Jax St. wondering what I was
doing there. In my Junior year my Mother had cancer
and I had to withdraw and go home to be with her and
run our family store. The problem was I was one week
past the time you could withdraw and not have
penalties. Armed with a doctor's letter I visited the
Dean of Men and he reached behind him on a bookshelf
and pulled the rules book out and read it to me.
There was nothing he could do. I went to the
President and sat in the lobby 2 hours until he saw
me. He also had a bookshelf behind his chair and did
the same thing. I never trusted anyone who had a
bookshelf behind their chair again. I went home after
receiving "F's" on all subjects and ran the
store. My Mom was cured and I took drafting at night
and landed a Job in December 1973 at Zurn Industries
(now Clarage). I have worked there ever since.
Clarage sells large 4000 HP and under Fans to the
Oil, Power, Steel, Cement and Paper Industries. I
concentrate on the Oil Industry. I went from drafting
to Sales and in 1992 married for a second time and
moved to Atlanta in 1996, 2 months before the
olympics. She was transferred by BellSouth. I work
out of my house now and travel a good deal. Some of
those business ports of call are London, Paris,
Caracus, Singapore and Soul as well as cities in the
U.S.. A few years ago Joe, the lead singer in The
Tams died. It was very sad. I remember in the Oporto
Armory on Tams's Tuesday they played one night after
the other lead singer broke his leg. There they were
doing a show for it seemed like 3 hours and his whole
leg was in a cast. He never sat down the whole time.
I remember it all and even with all the heartache it
was a time to treasure and remember. I travel to
B'ham once every 2 weeks now and when I eat in Five
Points South Ramsay pulls at me and sometimes I just
drive around it and look at places I parked on the
front and back and played the 4 track tapes and tried
to stay out of trouble. Trouble could find you there
but we all still cared for each other. I wonder if
Danny Woods (corrected name) ever graduated? He was
expelled on the last day of school in 1967 for having
beer in his car or standing outside on school
property with it. I do want to know. I didn't supply
it that day but it would have been an injustice. I
have one son who is 22 years old and attends Jeff.
St. in B'ham. He is Joe Vice III, of course. I
attended the 1967 Reunion in 1992 at The Club. It was
a blast. - Joe Vice, '67, Fan_Man@msn.com

4/02/00 I just want to say hello to all the great
Ramsay people and thanks to the work of the comittee,
especially Mary Ellen , and Jane J.D. for getting it
going and David Meadows for building the Rams webpage
and all the maintenance that goes with it. We need
help from all the five classes to help get the word
out.
I've really enjoyed reading comments from everyone
and how much the memories of our Ramsay days mean to
us.
To Bill Gresham and Emile S. and John
Osborn-et.al.---- be assured if I am alive Friday
night Aug 11, we will rock like the times at Duke's
place at the armory after the ball games.
I'm talking about the Tams, Coasters,Drifters, Irma
Thomas, Jimmy Reed, Contours, Arthur Alexander and
whatever anyone wants to hear or sing. Can't wait to
see everone.
God bless and keep safe. Randy
4/02/00 David: You and Randy are doing a terrific
job in posting the web site for everyone to respond.
I did not realize I had been so damn wordy until I
actually read the posting. Oh well, it has only been
35 years, I suppose one can be wordy when old as
hell. Thanks again for all your work on this project.
I wish I could attend the April 30th meeting but I
will be 50 miles out in the Gulf off Destin fishing
that day. Maybe I can help in some other way or
attend the next meeting. GRESHAM
4/01/00 Okay, I was kind of sparse in the
beginning, but here's the deal: After I left
Birmingham. I had a son, became a Library Book
Processor, divorced his idiot father shortly before I
turned 21, got cancer, died, came back at 21-1/2, and
decided to live my life to its fullest capability
forever thereafter. Hmmm. Many Sidetrips. Zookeeper
(truly), secretary for university psychology
department, barnacle counter for Miami Marine
Research, typesetter/pasteup artist (125 wpm/ .0001
error factor -- made megabucks as such), editor,
legal-eagle, production manager for Screen
Gems-Columbia Music, lyricist (Elizabeth Cotton of
modern rock n' roll), singer in a rock 'n roll band,
owner/operator -- custom type shop in Oklahoma City -
eek! -- Teacher -- special ed to machine shop &
sex education -- whew!, those New Mexico sophomores
either knew everything or were pregnant!, Editor,
Travel Editor, Russian Translator -- lived in Soviet
Union for about six months when Gorbechev was the
bee's knees; have a couple of degrees (never opted
for fame, just knowledge), one in English
(specialized in Medieval English Lit (Chaucer)), the
other in Russian. Speak five to six different
languages, dpending on my level of intoxication.
Marriage #4 put me into the U.S. military (shit, at
least I was married to a Russian), whereupon I became
the President of the Officer's Wive's Club at Hahn
AFB, West Germany. My first official act as Pres. was
a midnight showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show (knew
about it since 1974, when I was at Screen Gems). They
loved it. Since "taking the money and
running" from the USAF, we went to many
countries looking for a location for a proper B&B
(damn, just can't help feeding people). Ended up in
Texas (Jamaica wouldn't let my 20- and 19-year-old
cats into country), about seven years ago. Started an
International-styled Kafe (now three) with a Ruskie I
met while getting my Russian degree (at the
University of Oklahoma, god forbid). I also own a
typing business (of course, too easy), and have just
finished producing a manuscript (whereupon I had to
edit in five languages) for a 1,000-page historical
novel and a soul-food cookbook, a startup
computer-business company; and a script for an
upcoming Broadway production. I work on the Net a
lot, and am known to accept credit cards. I have
typing clients all over the world. Unfortunately,
more of them than music clients. While I was living
in Germany for about four years, I played guitar and
sing at a Weinstube in Zell/Mosel (about 30 miles as
the crow flies from France. Wannaa talk? Serena

3/30/00 I surely am glad I took typing at Ramsay
from Mrs Shook! Spanish from Mrs. Fowler has been
helpful, too.
For all you who lived in Alabama in 1998 AD, I
encourage you to get out the JESUS video you received
in the mail, and watch it again this Easter season.
If you don't have one, ask your neighbor, family, or
friend. Everyone was supposed to get one. I prescribe
watching it whenever you are anxious, depressed, or
have problems. It works! Robert M. (Bob) Cosby, M.D.,

3/29/00 My husband of 23 years, John, and I are
planning to attend the reunion if my health allows
and if we are in town. We love to travel and watch
wildlife. John is an Engineer (to pay the bills), but
his real love is wildlife photography and we spend as
much time as we can in the northwestern United
States. John and I have a lovely daughter and a
"genetically enhanced" dog that rules our
house! I am looking forward to seeing some old
friends. I moved to Atlanta soon after graduation and
have lost touch with almost everyone. If anyone knows
how I can contact Mary Elizabeth Massey (called
Libby) - class of 1966, I would appreciate any
information you can give me. We lived two doors apart
and I have thought about her so often over the years
and would love to know how she is. Mary Jane

He has been married nearly a year. We have been
involved with square dancing since 1984. In 1995 we
served as chairman of registration and housing for
the National Square Dance Convention(c) held in
Birmingham that year in which 12,700+ attended. For
several years we have been 'tracing our roots.' To
date we have gathered over 1,700 names on our 'family
tree' that spans 10+ generations. We have each
written articles published in the Heritage of Alabama
series, the Jefferson and Blount County volumes. We

3/28/00 Hello, Ramsay Classmates: It has been 35
years. As a member of the Class of 1965, I recall
many fond moments, now fading. I lived with my
grandmother off Arlington Avenue and shared a walk to
Ramsay with my late companion and friend, Rod Powers.
We spent many hours in the Electrik-Maid Bakery on
Highland Avenue, talked of our hopes, dreams, and
aspirations in life. As we all know, that was then,
this is now. I find through the years that my
attitude toward succes has changed and it was
enlightening to know that a man's true success is not
based upon how many GANT shirts or MADRAS colors he
posseses, nor upon the car he could afford. A man's
reward in life is the love of his family and friends,
the memories stored, and his positive approach to the
world. There were many special friends I recall from
the Ramsay days. Many women I would have married in a
heartbeat, if only they had asked: (Judy Compton,
Dian Doherty, Judy Harrison, Charyl Stovall.(God, so
many women, so little time!) I passed from the
obscurity of high school and moved on. I was shy,
relatively comfortable in my lifestyle and not
exactly the cream of society in 1962-65. Many years
after graduation, in 1979, in fact, I was in New York
City interviewing for a position. On the flight to
New York, in a seat near, was Francis Patterson, our
history teacher (you know, from first floor). Francis
and I talked, she and I shared a cab ride to the
Avenue of the Americas from LaGuardia. I will never
forget how comforting it was to find a friendly face
in the crowd, accept her experienced guidance through
the challenge of travel to such an exciting place. I
am thankful I was accepted as a friend by some while
at Ramsay. I often think back on the pummeling in the
alley given to so many by the Bittinger brothers.
Man, was I glad I was so obscure! My thoughts return
to Spring days, Red Mountain blossoming in young
green, dogwoods, no A/C, and the expectation of the
final bell at 3 P.M. There was music on WSGN, WAQY,
Layton & Charles, "Duke the Spook, The Tune
Tycoon", friends, cars, Burger-In-A-Hurry,
Friday-night football at Legion Field, Hollywood
Country Club, Shoney's Big Boy, and mischief and
mayhem to be taken care of on weekends. Rod Powers,
Phillip Alford and I could always find plenty of
that. I miss Rod. He was a great man, a talented
artist, and stood up for all Americans in his
attitude. Unfortunately he died of leukemia a few
year back. He is not forgotten. So, how are each of
you faring? As for me, I went on to graduate from the
University of Montevallo in 1969, did a short stint
in the Alabama National Guard to avoid pain and
bleeding from wounds during the VietNam era. I met at
Montevallo and married the girl of my life, Anita
Jane Sheppard (Class of 1965, W.A. Berry High
School). Jane and I have been married for thirty
years this October 31st (yes, Halloween), and she
bore me two of the finest children man could be
allowed, Alex and Linn. My son, Alex, age 26, is the
Assistant Dean of Students at Ole Miss, and my
daughter, Linn, age 20, is in her Junior year at the
University of Montevallo. I have been blessed with a
fine family, a rewarding profession as a Firefighter
with the City of Hoover. I am currently a Fire
Captain, assigned to manage Fire Station #6, on
Highway 150 in Hoover. My professional choice was a
good one for I have learned: It is in the help shown
to others, in their most desperate time of need, that
my life is enriched and fulfilled; my ! spirit soars
in the satisfaction of the work. Jane works as the
Store Manager at Plantation House in Hoover (across
from The Riverchase Galleria). Jane and I have lived
in Hoover since 1983, here in the same house on
Spearman Drive (The House Beside the Road). Jane and
I are members of Mountain Chapel United Methodist
Church on Rocky Ridge Road since 1974. God too, plays
an all-important role in the structure and path of my
life. I am not the best of Christians, but not the
worst. Sounds much like my school days. I hope I have
not been too wordy here for it is through thirty-five
years of growing and maturity that I speak these
words to each of you, my peers. I hope your lives
have been as fruitful as mine and your lessons in
life have given each of you as much personal
satisfaction as I have received. Too many
"I's" here. The opportunity to read your
comments will also lift me up. Let us talk during the
renunion. Perhaps you and I can now get to know each
other a bit more comfortably. Jane and I look forward
to seeing all of you there, wherever that might be. I
get to see Donnie Prier, who is a Hoover Police
Officer often and we reminisce of Ramsay days. BILL
GRESHAM (BILLY GRESHAM, BACK IN 1965.) Please e-mail
me and let's keep in touch. WPGRESHAM@AOL.com
3/27/00 I really want to attend the reunion and we
will be there if possible. I am willing to help, but
I don't know what I might be able to do. If you need
me, call and I will do what I can. If I can't help at
that time, I'll tell you that, too. I didn't see many
names from our class of '63, but I don't know where
any of them are. Dan Curtis, '63, dxedan@aol.com
3/27/00 You may or may not know that Harriet
Brazille and I were best friends, even in grammar
school. We would go to dinner with our spouses, and
help each other out when babies were born. She and my
husband, Charlie both died in 1997 of cancer.
Harriet's husband was there for Charlie and me until
he died five months later. David and I clung together
for dear life and married Jan. '98. Janette Spencer

3/27/00 Hi, Looking so forward. Thank you for
finding us and for all your hard work. Recently move
to Florida after 20 odd years in "yankee"
land - New Jersey. Hopefully, this is it! Moved a ton
over the years so pleasantly surprised you were able
to find me! Nancy Denty Onorato, '67, nonorato@ozline.net
3/26/00 Hope to make the reunion, but I'm involved
with lots of friend's children's weddings in August.
I have to make do with that since neither of my boys
is close to marrying. Stewart graduates from UVa Law
School in May, 2000 and will practice with a firm in
NYC. Morgan is a first- year medical student at
Columbia's Physicians and Surgeons College in NYC.

3/26/00 I didn't get to graduate with you guys
because we moved away at the beginning of my senior
year. But I went to grade school and high school with
a lot of you, and I would love to reconnect and find
out all about your lives. I think I'm coming to the
reunion with my sister, Sarah. Serena Zuckerman
Verzhinsky, '65, muffingds@aol.com
3/26/00 Hi, David, Was delighted to get the e-mail
about the reunion. Don't know how you cleverly got my
address, not that it was a secret, but it always
amazes me how that happens. The condition of our high
school was a shocker. It was a beautiful building,
one which should be on the historic landmark list for
restoration. Don't know yet if I will be able to
attend, but put me down as a definite maybe. Would
love to attend. Uncertain at this time. Please keep
me informed. Nora Crosby Coalson, '65, ncoalson@pdq.net
3/26/00 I wish we could bring back just one Friday
night at "DUKES". Emile Shunnarah, '65, emile@bellsouth.net

me. My maiden name is Siegel ; Susan Siegel. Please
put me on the contact list and send me the info on
the reunion coming up. Thanks, Susan Siegel Brooks,

3/24/00 Jane and Ward, Thanks for the announcement
of our next Ramsay reunion at The Club, with The
Ramblers, on August 12th. Including the years 1963 -
1967 makes it possible for my brother and sister and
I to all be included. That hasn't happened in many
years outside a neighborhood or family-only event!
Perhaps not since a Ramsay football game! Mardi Cosby

the others that are listed, and will be happy to
help. Great job on this website, and on all the work
